The Man Who Revolutionised The World With Scissors

Can you imagine what it was like to get your hairstyle done before this time? Hours on end every week at the salon in Australia. Not only did this empower hairdressers and hairstylists, this empowered women and the fight for equality in the workforce.

Vidal Sassoon was a British-American hairstylist professional, a businessman, and most importantly, the many who changed the world during the 1950s and '60s with his "wash-and-wear" hair innovation.

Vidal's goal was to minimise the time it takes hairstyles and avoid the weekly trips to the salon and hours of care that was required then for the bouffant styles. Sassoon's focus was on precise scissor cuts and geometric angles that create simple hairstyles that complemented each woman's individual bone structure and natural hair texture.

Vidal Sassoon was born in 1928 in London, England. When he was 14 Vidal started to work as a shampooer in a little English salon and this was where he learned above hairstyles at a young age. Once he was older he opened his first hairdresser salon in London and one of his first clients was Mary Quant, the fashion inventor of the mini-skirt.

Innovation with Hairdressing Salons

Vidal once famously said "Women started to work, to finally assume their own power. They did not have time to wait sitting down below the hair-drier", explained Vidal Sassoon in 2001 to the Los Angeles Times. His passion leads him to solve the problem in the 1960s. The Geometric Perm that will revolutionise the hairdressing world.

Can you imagine what it was like to get your hairstyle done before this time? Hours on end every week at the salon in Australia. Not only did this empower hairdressers and hairstylists, this empowered women and the fight for equality in the workforce.

A modern view of hairdressing salons

Vidal soon opened schools, his line of hair-care products and built his hairdressing empire based originally on his innovations in hairstyles the revolutionised the world. His largest success is the VS Sassoon hairdressing supplies that offer modern and unique hairstyle equipment to hairdressers and hair enthusiasts alike.

The summary of this was a story of a person who could see the hair industry screaming for innovation and the empowerment of women through efficiencies in hairstyling. What started with shampooing ended up with a new method of hairdressing and a hair empire standing strong until this day. For all the hairdressers and salon professional, we are thankful to be using these innovations every day when cutting hair in Australia.

  • Nice bio on Vidal Sassoon. I didn’t know he was an actual person. I’d love to learn more about this fascinating man who revolutionized the world with scissors. Someone should make a movie about this. It’s not just about Sassoon’s life story, but how he changed the culture with his hair-cutting scissors and new methods.
